Pill Hill
Pill Hill homes weren't built to a pattern, so we don't walk into one with a pattern in mind either. Each house got designed for the family that was going to live in it, and a hundred years later the basement of every one still tells you something different.
Kutzky Park
A lot of Kutzky Park basements have been finished and refinished in pieces by every owner who lived there. By the time the current homeowner bought the place, the basement had a few decades of decisions stacked into it that nobody really wrote down.
Slatterly Park
Most of the Slatterly Park calls we get come from a buyer in the middle of a home inspection with two weeks to closing and a radon number that came back higher than expected. We know the pace those conversations move at.
Historic Southwest
A lot of Historic Southwest homes have been remodeled four or five times since they were built. Each remodel left its mark on the basement, and the radon story for any individual house has to start with what those layers look like.
Folwell
The first question a Folwell homeowner usually has is some version of, "does any of this involve tearing up my finished basement?" It's a fair thing to ask, and it's usually the place where the conversation starts.
Bamber Valley
If your Bamber Valley home was built after June of 2009, the radon prep is already in your slab. Whether or not it's doing what it's supposed to be doing is a different question, and it's the one most owners around here are actually asking.
Manor Woods
Manor Woods and Manor Woods West went up fast, mostly from a small handful of builder packages, and the houses share enough DNA that we usually have a sense of the layout before we pull up to the curb.
Country Club Manor
Country Club Manor has lot sizes you don't see much in the rest of Rochester. The houses sit back from the street, the side yards are generous, and there's more room to work with than there is closer to downtown.
Greenview
Greenview is one of those neighborhoods where we won't commit to anything specific over the phone. Two homes a block apart can sit on completely different foundations, and what fits one of them might not be right for the other one at all.
Century Hills
Most of the Century Hills and Cassidy Ridge calls we get are from buyers, not owners. The closing date is already on the calendar, the inspection came back with a number, and the question is what to do with the time between now and the walkthrough.
Hart Farms and Mayo Woodlands
Most of the homes in Hart Farms and Mayo Woodlands are custom builds, and a custom build doesn't look like the house next door. The walkout, the bonus room over the garage, the slab-on-grade addition. Each of those is its own thing.
Millie Meadows
Millie Meadows is recent enough that most of the basements still look the way the builder left them. That makes a first visit shorter than it would be in older housing, and it makes the radon picture easier to read.
Quarry Hill and Apple Hill
East Rochester is where the limestone under your house stops being abstract. Quarry Hill Park is named for the limestone that came out of the hill, and the homes around it sit on or near the same rock. That shifts what's happening underneath the slab.

Byron, Stewartville, Pine Island, Oronoco, Kasson, Mantorville, Chatfield, Zumbrota, Spring Valley, and Preston. The rock under your home does not stop at the city limits.
Byron
Byron has roughly doubled in size since 2000, and most of the housing here is younger than the kids in it. For a lot of homeowners in town, the radon question is something they're thinking about for the first time, often after a coworker brought it up or a neighbor mentioned a test.
Stewartville
The median construction year for a Stewartville home is 1987, which means the housing here splits roughly in half between older central blocks and newer subdivisions on the edges. The radon question is the same one either way, but the basement it lives in looks very different.
Pine Island
Pine Island has been adding new housing for years and has plenty more on the way. The town recently annexed land for a development with around 200 single-family lots, plus medium and high density housing on top of that. The radon question for these homes looks different than it does in the older parts of town.
Oronoco
Oronoco wraps around Lake Zumbro, and a lot of the housing here is tied to the water in one way or another. Older lake cabins that got converted to year-round homes, newer builds on lots with a view of the river, and rural acreage homes outside the city limits. The basements vary as much as the homes do.
Kasson
Kasson sits across the county line from Olmsted, but the ground underneath is the same and the EPA puts Dodge County in the same Zone 1 radon tier. For a homeowner here, the radon question doesn't change because of which county the property tax goes to.
Mantorville
Mantorville is one of the oldest cities in Minnesota, founded in 1854, and the entire twelve-block downtown has been on the National Register since 1974. A fair number of the homes here are nearly as old as the town, and the foundations underneath them are part of the architectural record.
Chatfield
Chatfield straddles the line between Fillmore and Olmsted counties, with most of the city in Fillmore. The downtown core is one of the most intact small-town main streets in this part of Minnesota, and the housing around it covers eight decades of construction.
Zumbrota
Zumbrota has the only original covered bridge left in Minnesota, a downtown that has been continuously occupied since the 1850s, and a real estate market shaped in part by Mayo Clinic commuters. The housing here covers a wider span than the population would suggest.
Spring Valley
Spring Valley sits in some of the most studied karst landscape in Minnesota. The town is a few miles from Niagara Cave, and sinkholes are mapped throughout the surrounding townships. For homeowners here, the geology is not abstract.
Preston
Preston is the county seat of Fillmore County and home to the National Trout Center. The town is built into the bluffs along the Root River, and the terrain here is more dramatic than anywhere else in the region. The geology that drives the trout fishing also shapes what's happening under the homes.
